Elvis Presley is the world's richest dead celebrity - last year earning $45 million from beyond the grave.

The Memphis star, who died in 1977, topped a list of high earning celebrities for the fifth year running.

The "Suspicious Minds" singer generated the impressive sum from DVD and TV releases, as well as a rise in visitors to his Graceland home.

Not far behind in the annual list compiled by business magazine Forbes, was John Lennon - up from fourth place last year to third.

The ex-Beatle's estate made $12 million, mainly from hit Broadway musical "Lennon."

Johnny Cash and Ray Charles also broke into the top rankings after Hollywood film biographies of their lives boosted their royalty payments.

The magazine compiled a 13-strong list, which also included Theodor Geisel, author of the Dr Seuss stories, JRR Tolkien and George Harrison.
