Wild-eyed and manically comic, Jack Black went from character actor in small roles in Mars Attacks (1996, directed by Tim Burton) and Enemy of the State (1998, with Will Smith), to stealing the show in High Fidelity (2000, starring John Cusack) and landing leading roles in Shallow Hal (2001, co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow), Orange County (2002) and School of Rock (2003).

Black was also the star of Heat Vision and Jack (1999, with the voice of Owen Wilson), a tongue-in-cheek TV series directed by Ben Stiller that was made for Fox television but never broadcast. Black is also half of the rock duo Tenacious D, who briefly starred in their own HBO series (1999). In 2004 he co-starred with Stiller in Envy (directed by Barry Levinson).
