Jamie Bell made his professional debut in the leading role of Billy in Billy Elliot.
Jamie was a hot young newcomer whose own story ironically paralleled that of his
character. Jamie began his dancing career at the age of six and was discovered after a
search of over 2,000 children. Based on his performance he has built a reputation as
a talent to watch - but only outside his hometown of Billingham, because like his
character Billy, he had successfully hidden his dancing talents from all his classmates.
The British film has garnered three nominations at that year's European Film of the Year
Awards, including Best Film, Best Actor (Jamie Bell) and Best Actress (Julie Walters).
He won the BAFTA AWARD for performance by an actor in a leading role, and was nominated
by the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) for outstanding performance by a male actor in a
leading role. He also walked off with Young Artist Award for his role in Billy Elliot.
After a few years away from films Jamie was back in the direct to video Deathwatch,
and in the theatrical release of Nicholas Nickleby, where he gave another great
performance. His most recent film had him taking on a Texan accnet for the Indie thriller
Undertow which alos stars Devon Alan as his younger brother. He also will be seen
in 2004 in Dear Wendy, and set for 2005 The Chumscrubber as well as King Kong.
