International supermodel Kate Moss has been seen in numerous commercials and fashion shows, but for many she is “the Heroin Chic” of Calvin Klein, thanks to her controversial waif look that appears in most of the Calvin Klein ads. In addition, Moss has been the cover model of magazines Vogue, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as the spokesmodel of many prestigious brands including Cerruti 1881, Banana Republic, Versace, and Yves Saint-Laurent. Her triumphant modeling career has been further established by earning such awards as a Fashion Personality of the Year award (1995), a 1996 VH1 Fashion Model of the Year, and a Vogue/CFDA award from Fashion Designers of America (2005).

Yet, her solid career was threatened by her addiction to drugs and alcohol. After checking herself in at Priory Clinic (London) in 1998 for exhaustion, Moss later admitted to drinking during fashion shows. Following her lawsuit in July 2005 against The Sunday Mirror for its claim of her cocaine-induced coma, the vegan model admitted to her cocaine addiction after the September 2005 issue of British newspaper The Daily Mirror displayed her picture while sniffing cocaine at Pete Doherty’s recording studio. Losing contracts with fashion labels, Moss apologized and declared her willingness to undergo rehab at The Meadows Clinic in Arizona. With support from several companies and friends including artist Stella Vine who exhibited a painting of Moss among her “The Beautiful and the Damned” collection, Moss completed the drug treatment in October 2005.

Moss also had an on-off relationship with Pete Doherty. Reportedly, Moss is now romantically involved with Vivi Nevo, the co-owner of the American entertainment firm Time Warner.

On January 16, 1974, Kate Moss was born Katherine Moss in Addiscomb, Croydon, Surrey, in England. Kate, whose brother Nick is also a model, began her journey in the modeling world when she met Sarah Doukas from the British model agency Storm at the age of 14. Her parents divorced which she was fifteen.

On September 29, 2002, Kate gave birth to her daughter, Lila Grace, at the St. John and Elizabeth Hospital in west London. The father of her daughter is Jefferson Hack, a publisher of the British magazine Dazed & Confused.

After signing up with Storm Model Agency, Kate Moss had her first major photo shoot posing topless for the cover of British magazine The Face. She then appeared on the covers of such British magazines as Elle, The Face and Arena, and American magazines like Allure and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as the American, British, Australian, Italian, and Brazilian editions of Vogue.

In the early 90s, thanks to her waif look and tiny, skinny body, Moss attracted the attention of Calvin Klein, which brought her name to the world after displaying her image in most of its product commercials, including the fragrances Obsession, CK Be and CK One. For her frequent appearances for the elite house, Moss was called “The Face of Calvin Klein.” Her unhealthy, anorexic look, on the other hand, raised controversy and claims that she was triggering anorexia among teenagers. Her frail figure, which was also called “heroin chic,” never stopped Moss from moving on. She modeled for other products, such as Burberry, L’Oreal, Yves Saint Laurent, Cerutti 1881, Dolce and Gabbana, De Beers Simple Diamonds and Versace. In 1997, Moss selected a number of her photos representing her career steps and published her picture book titled Kate: The Kate Moss Story.

Moss was also seen on catwalks for top designers like Versace, Chanel, and Calvin Klein. She had campaigns with major European designers also, including Dior, Burberry, Rimmel, H & M, and Bulgari. From cameras and catwalks, Moss shifted to the small and big screen. She made her acting debut in Ellen Von Unwerth’s made-for-TV comedy Inferno (1992), alongside models Tyra Banks, Helena Christensen and Eva Herzigova. Moss also made guest appearances as herself in the documentary films Unzipped (1995), Catwalk (1996), and Beautopia (1998). The model had her first wide screen acting experience in Paul Weiland’s comedy Blackadder Back & Forth (1999), where she took the supporting role of Maid Marian/Queen Marian.
