Background:
“I love music, but I’m not gonna work myself to death. If there ever comes a
point where I’m not enjoying it, then I’m not gonna do it anymore. I’ve promised
myself that. I’ve written it down on paper and signed a contract.” Solange
Knowles
Young rising entertainer Solange Knowles proved that she is more than just
Beyonce’s sister. Starting out as a dancer for Destiny’s Child, she is now known
as the singer of the banging up-tempo jam “Feelin’ You (Part I & II)” (2002), a
No. 2 U.S. Dance Sales chart hit that was featured in her debut album Solo Star
(2003). Amid her musical work, Knowles also tried acting through several screen
gigs, including a guest role in “The Proud Family” (2002, also sang the theme
song) and the turn of Nikki Johnson in Christopher Erskin’s comedy Johnson
Family Vacation (2004).
Aside from her growing career in music and acting, Knowles once starred in Bow
Wow’s music video “Puppy Love.” The fan of Mena Suvari, Tamia, Musiq Soulchild,
Dido and naturally Destiny’s Child, the young performer has been seen on the
pages of Teen People, Seventeen, YM, Honey, and J-14 magazines. As for her
private life, Knowles is the wife of Daniel Smith, with whom she has a son named
Daniel Julez J. Smith.
Beyonce’s Sister
Childhood and Family:
Solange Piaget Knowles was born on June 24, 1986, in Houston, Texas. The second
child of Matthew Knowles and Tina Knowles, Solange is the only sister of famous
musician Beyonce Knowles (born on September 4, 1981).
Her musical and dancing talent emerged at a very young age. Joining a Houston
children’s dance troupe at age 2, Solange found herself fulfilled after
performing on stage. At the age of 7, she began writing lyrics, and when she was
12, she arranged melodies.
On February 27, 2004, 5’ 8” Solange exchanged wedding vows with football player
Daniel Smith in the Bahamas. Eight months later, she gave birth to son Daniel
Julez J. Smith.
Feelin’ You
Career:
“I’d like people to hear the maturity, both in the range of music and the
lyrics; that I’m not just another teen singer and that I really put a lot of
myself into my music. That’s why I really think it’s important that young people
do for themselves and not allow anyone to shape them or create them. I’ve had to
really stand my own ground with this record, listen to different points of view,
even from my own family, but at the end I had the confidence to stand by my
choices and stand for myself. That’s what Solo Star is all about; being true to
yourself and your vision.” Solange Knowles
13-year old Solange Knowles’ proposal of having a professional musical career
was not immediately agreed to by her parents, but the same year she was
eventually able to perform on stage as a backup dancer for Destiny’s Child.
Before long, she embarked on the group’s world tour and became a permanent
backup dancer for the group.
Aside from her stage performances, Knowles showed off her musical talent by
contributing her vocals to the track “The Little Drummer Boy,” which was put
into Destiny’s Child’s holiday album 8 Days Of Christmas (2001). Exploring even
further, she made her screen debut in an episode of the sitcom “Taina.” She also
had a guest role as Chanel in the animated series “The Proud Family” (2002), in
which she also provided a theme song. Finally convinced of Knowles’
determination, her parents helped her sign a record deal.
The same year, Solange Knowles’ debut single, the up-tempo “Feelin’ You (Part I
& II),” was launched, heralding the release of her first album Solo Star, in
2003. The album reached No. 49 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart, while the
single “Feelin’ You (Part II)” (featuring N.O.R.E.) climbed to the second
position of the U.S. Dance Sales. Aside from her producing and composing with
her sister, Knowles also designed its video, which later received a Soul Train
Lady of Soul nomination for Best R&B/Soul or Rap Music Video. The album also
spawned the tracks “This Could Be Love” and “I Used To,” both of which were
co-written by her. Amazingly, the recording also featured her collaboration with
the Neptunes in “Crush” and Timbaland in the hip shaking “Get Together.”
Meanwhile, after guest starring in the sitcom “One on One” (2004), Knowles was
seen in the leading role of Nikki Johnson, who fashioned herself as the next
Lolita, in Christopher Erskin’s comedy Johnson Family Vacation (2004), alongside
Cedric the Entertainer, Vanessa L. Williams and Bow Wow. A small stint in the
sport comedy series “Listen Up” (2005) brought the young entertainer her second
silver screen performance, playing Camille in the straight-to-video sequel Bring
It On: All or Nothing (2006). Still in 2006, Knowles will reportedly release her
sophomore album Unknown Life.
